Learning for Life Goals – Completing Life Goals!
At 1st Enable, we’ve been running the Learning for Life course with Empeiria Training, and some amazing people from our services took part. Their commitment over the 12 weeks was honestly brilliant, and we’re really excited to see what they do next!
This is wonderful summary from Michelle, who worked closely with those doing the course.
“In April, three residents at St Thomas House challenged themselves to complete a course called “Learning for Life”, which was a course funded by the Skills and Employment Service with CWAC, and delivered by Empeiria Training.
This was a 12-week course giving the residents several different life skills, including confidence building, team working, and employability, and also covering wellbeing. St Thomas House very kindly lent us their Common Room for the whole course, so that the residents involved could complete their work without being distracted or interrupted.
All three residents committed to completing the course, which meant attending twice a week (one week it was 3 times!) … and in between all of the learning and the hard work that they did, they had a lot of fun, had some really great conversations, did a lot of mindfulness art, ate a great amount of donuts(!), attended a Job’s Fair (followed by coffee and milkshakes!) and all got to know each other much better. It was lovely to see the growth of all residents involved, especially in their confidence.
The residents all had really fantastic outcomes from the course, with one finding paid employment for the first time, another finding (and starting) numerous voluntary employment opportunities, and the other finding a way to work in the only thing they wanted to do! Of course, there was a celebration at the end of the course, this was at 1st Enable’s head office, where other residents (and staff) also attended to help celebrate … there was cake, there were cuppas, and there was most definitely singing and dancing. We expected nothing less!
Massive well done to all involved – you all did AMAZING!!! Thank you for working so hard … we look forward to seeing how you use the skills you’ve gained going forward.”1st Enable are incredibly proud of their achievement and very excited to see what they go onto do with this
in their skillset.
The Big Number 1 for the wonderful folk at St Jonz
On Wednesday, the 11th of June, the St Jon Apartments in Wakefield joyfully celebrated their very first birthday and what a celebration it was!
Residents and friends gathered at the Slazenger Sports Club for an unforgettable evening filled with laughter, music, and great company. The atmosphere buzzed with excitement as everyone came together to mark this special milestone in the heart of the community.
The event featured a mouth-watering buffet that satisfied every appetite, offering a variety of delicious dishes to suit all tastes. Guests had a blast posing for fun and quirky photos in the photo booth, capturing memories that will be cherished for years to come.
Karaoke added a lively spark to the night, with catchy tunes blasting through the speakers as people danced and sang their hearts out. One of the highlights of the evening was a beautiful performance on the keyboard, delivered by a talented resident from St Jonz a moment that
truly brought the crowd together.
By the end of the night, everyone left with full bellies, hoarse voices, and big smiles on their faces a clear sign of a night well spent. The first birthday of St Jonz Apartments was more than just a party; it was a celebration of community, joy, and the shared journey ahead.
Here’s to many more years of laughter, friendship, and memories at St Jonz Apartments!
The Big Cricket Day
Thank you to everyone for being so wonderful on cricket day giving it your all, supporting each other, and making it such a memorable event. The smiles, laughter, and team spirit were truly heart-warming to see. It was a day full of fun, connection, and great energy. We’re grateful to have such an amazing group of people come together. Looking forward to many more days like this!
What a showdown between the West and East! It was a nail-biter right to the very end, with the West keeping the pressure on. But in the end, Cheshire East stole the spotlight! With some cracking batting and solid all around play, they clinched the win in style. Hats off to both sides for an epic match!
Sunshine, BBQ & Birthday Cheer
We recently had the absolute pleasure of celebrating a very special milestone – Elliott
from Cotton Hall Service turned 16! The big day was filled with sunshine, smiles, and a strong
sense of community as everyone came together to make it a celebration to remember.
To mark the occasion, the team organized a sunny outdoor get-together, complete with a
sizzling barbeque. The BBQ was a hit, serving up a spread of mouth-watering food that had
something for everyone from juicy burgers and hot dogs to fresh salads and sweet treats. The
scent of grilled goodness filled the air, adding to the festive atmosphere.
Elliott was surrounded by friends, staff, and well-wishers from across the service, all eager to share in his special day. There was a wonderful sense of joy and togetherness, with everyone taking the time to relax, catch up, and enjoy the sunshine. One of the day’s highlights was the friendly (yet competitive!) water gun fight. It quickly became clear that no one was safe from a splash but in the end, it was Tina who claimed victory as the undisputed water fight champion! Her aim and enthusiasm earned her the title, and plenty of laughs from everyone.
Elliott had a fantastic time and was all smiles throughout the celebration. It was heart-warming to see how loved and supported he is by those around him, and we’re so happy we
could be part of such a meaningful day. From all of us at 1st Enable and across our services Happy 16th Birthday, Elliott! May your year ahead be filled with happiness, adventure, and everything that brings you joy.

Looking After you health: One step at a time
We all know how challenging our health both physical and mental can be, and how it affects every part of our lives. But don’t lose hope. Even small changes can lead to meaningful improvements. A tiny step in the right direction is still progress.
We all want to see each other grow and flourish, and one of the most important ways we can support each other is through honest communication. Talking about how we feel isn’t a weakness it’s a strength. Remember: communication is key.
If you’re struggling, please reach out. Talk to someone you trust a carer, a friend, a family member, or anyone you feel comfortable with. You don’t have to go through it alone. Bottling up your feelings can weigh you down and lead to overwhelming thoughts and emotions.
Supporting your mental health:
- Talk it out: Expressing your feelings can ease stress and anxiety.
- Practice mindfulness or meditation: These helps calm the mind and improve focus.
- Set small, achievable goals: Success builds confidence and motivation.
- Limit social media: Take breaks if it’s affecting your self-esteem or mood.
- Seek professional help: Therapists, counsellors, or support groups can make a big difference.
Supporting your physical health:
- Stay active: Even a short walk each day boosts energy and mood.
- Eat balanced meals: Nutritious food fuels both body and mind.
- Get enough sleep: Rest is essential for recovery.
- Stay hydrated: Water supports every system in your body.
- Listen to your body: Don’t ignore signs of fatigue, pain, or stress.
You matter. Taking care of your health isn’t selfish, its essential. Let’s support each other and take the first step together.
